Just down the road from Jefferson’s Monticello, Ashlawn-Highland is the home of our fifth president James Monroe. You take a house tour and explore the grounds. There is also an amazing tree known as the Monroe Oak.

Nerd Trips ABCs

Admission fee: Yes. Check the website for updated information. You can get a discount with some combination tickets with Monticello and other offers. (We paid about $14).

Bathrooms: Okay/decent

Concessions/food: Limited. I think there were some local treats in the gift shop, including “Virginia-made foods such as honey and hickory syrup.”

Cars/ getting there: We drove, parking was easy. Ashlawn Highland is a neighbor to Monticello.

Coffee cups (aka souvenirs): Extensive gift shop, including products from local artisans. I purchased a few postcards.
