IMG_2292The National Portrait Gallery, part of the Smithsonian, features official presidential portraits. Be sure to check out the famous painting of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart saved by Dolley Madison and her servants before the White House was burned in the War of 1812.

We talked about the Gilbert painting in a post about George Washington.

Nerd Trips ABCs

Admission fee: It’s part of the Smithsonian – it’s free

Bathrooms: It’s museum, there are decent bathrooms

Concessions/food: There is a nice cafe (it’s maybe a little pricey). You can eat in this cool indoor atrium with a wavy ceiling.

Cars/getting there: The National Portrait Gallery is in the middle of D.C. We took the Metro

Coffee cups (aka souvenirs): There is an extensive shop. I bought a book on presidential trivia.
