Lyndon Johnson’s plane at the “Texas White House”

The original idea of Nerd Trips started with visits to presidential homes, birthplaces, burial sites and libraries, so Presidents Day seems like something we should acknowledge!

I enjoy visiting these places because you learn about our presidents as people: their likes and dislikes, hobbies, quirks, families and even foibles.

Here are a few random facts from the places we’ve visited:

President Garfield was a professor of ancient languages

President Madison was the shortest president (5 feet, 4 inches)

President Hayes established the White House Easter egg hunt

Coat created by Andrew Johnson (Johnson House, Raleigh, NC)

President Andrew Johnson was a trained tailor

President McKinley was sometimes called the “Ohio Napoleon” because he often put a hand inside his coat when he spoke

The Oval Office at the George H.W. Bush library

All of our presidents faced individual challenges on their journey to our nation’s highest office, so take a moment today to learn a fact or two them. (Actually, every day is a good day to learn something new! If you prefer to “get your geek on,” today is also the 50th anniversary of the John Glenn’s Friendship 7  mission, you can learn about that too).

My coworker commented that this is my “big day.” Of course, I’m working. I hope you can enjoy a day off!

I look forward to sharing with you more my Nerd Trips encounters with our nation’s presidents.
