Rapidan Camp was a retreat for President Herbert Hoover

President Herbert Hoover wanted a retreat in the woods within 100 miles of Washington, DC. You can now visit Rapidan Camp, also known as Camp Hoover. It’s part of the Shenandoah National Park on Skyline Drive in Virginia.

We had some interesting animal encounters on our trip: Part 1 and Part 2

Nerd Trips ABCs:

Admission fee: It’s free. But I would that a two-mile hike in and back should count as some sort of price you have to pay (you can take shuttle from the Byrd Visitors Center)

Bathrooms: Nope. Go before you leave.

Concessions/food: Nope. Eat before you leave. We had some snacks for our hike.

Cars/getting there: We parked our car at the top of the Mill Prong Trail and hiked in. There is a shuttle from the Byrd Visitors Center.

Coffee cups (aka souvenirs): Nice gift shop at the Visitors Center, although it’s not presidential focused.
